Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file (OSCommerce)

osCommerce may print this message at the top of your website. The rest of the message includes the path to your config.php file:

/home/yourusername/public_html/path/to/configure.php

and warns: This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file.

To get rid of this message, simply chmod the config file to 444.

  • To do that, log into cpanel, click on file manager, and click on your public_html folder.
  • Browse to your os commerce directory, if needed.
  • Open the includes directory, and click on config.php.
  • In the upper right, you can choose "Change Permissions" .
  • Leave checks only in the top three boxes, and the numbers below should say 444.
  • Apply your changes.

Refresh your site, and the message will be gone.

Make sure your admin directory is secure now, and you should be good to go.
